Texas Compact on Civility and Stability

The advisory board for the Texas office of Common Ground-USA consists of leaders from four key sectors: Business, Education, Veterans, and Faith. The board’s mission is to create actionable plans to decrease political polarization and mitigate political violence, building on its members' expertise and experience.

Preamble

We are dedicated to maintaining and enhancing our state’s social and economic well-being.       We recognize that our actions and values not only impact our businesses, associations, and organizations, but also the communities in which we operate and live. As such, we commit to fostering an environment of civility, respecting differences, rejecting violence, and ensuring Texas remains a place where everyone can thrive.

Therefore, we commit to championing and living by these five principles:

  1. Championing Civility: We recognize that a return to civility in public discourse is vital and necessary and that our individual actions matter. We will encourage our colleagues, associates, and members to promote civility, discourage violence, and advocate for peaceful solutions.

  2. Respectful Disagreement: We acknowledge that disagreement is part of healthy discourse. But there’s no room for violence in Texas politics. Let’s remember that we can disagree while still respecting our fellow Texans. We pledge to foster an environment where people focus on what unites us, talk through what divides us and extend common courtesy and respect to one another.

  3. Upholding Our Welcoming Tradition: Texas has a proud history of being a friendly and welcoming state. We commit to upholding this tradition, ensuring our organizations and the people within them contribute to a welcoming environment for all people.

  4. Promoting Stability for Prosperity: We know our economy thrives in stable, peaceful environments. We commit to supporting initiatives and policies that promote safety, stability, and well-being, understanding these are essential to the Texas economy and the prosperity of our communities.

  5. Leading by Example: As business, non-profit and civic leaders, we have a responsibility to lead by example in promoting respect and understanding. We commit to embodying these values in our operations and interactions, inspiring others to do the same.

Commitment

We, the undersigned, pledge to uphold these principles in our day-to-day practices and community engagements. By doing so, we aim to contribute to a stronger, more united Texas, where businesses and people can prosper, and communities can flourish in a stable and civil environment.
